This piece is a very interesting take, Elianna. Interestingly enough, I fully agree, though that might just be that I am a conservative that likes to have my biases confirmed.

But I do believe that you strike on a very important reality: both sides of the debate claim to monopolize truth, and thus reject debate from opposing views. I think that Medium itself is actually a stellar example of where this occurs: the vast majority of featured articles seem from a liberal or progressive bent, with conservative voices no where to be found.

You and I will probably disagree on the truth. Others will, too. Out of those disagreements, some justify silencing dissent, effectively creating an echo chamber of voices they agree with. But this is a mistake. Simply the act of debate makes one more intelligent. Through discussion one might not only learn more about others views, but you come to understand your own better as well.

That’s why I think conservatives need to have more of a voice on this platform. (I write more fully about why here: https://link.medium.com/c1ym1V8qJU) Even if progressives were correct on 99% of the issues, which I highly doubt, they would still benefit from interacting with opposing views on a regular basis.
