Christians, The Original Culture Warriors

A few times a week, I receive emails from conservative news and commentary outlets asking me to support them as they “take on the culture war.”

This trend is a testament to the influence of Andrew Breitbart on the conservative commentary sphere, who astutely observed that “politics is downstream of culture.” Awakened to this reality, conservatives in influential positions are beginning to see the daunting task in front of them, given the left-wing chokehold over the major institutions of entertainment and education, and by extension the hearts and minds of young Americans.

But the culture war is not a new phenomenon, and the commanding influence that cultural forces wield over politics and society is no accident; progressives have for decades strategically positioned themselves to control cultural institutions in order to enact their agenda of change. What’s new is the scale and pace of their assault, which has finally reached a degree which can no longer be ignored by those of the “live and let live” conservative disposition.

That for so long progressives were allowed to act largely unchecked is an indictment of conservatives who abdicated their responsibility to protect and positively promote the core values and traditions of the United States.

There was one “conservative” institution, however, that was keenly aware of the cultural threat, and has aggressively stood against the left’s encroachments at every point. This institution is the church.
